The Woodlands had to dig out of a deep hole Monday night in the Region II-6A quarterfinals.
Down two sets to the Lady Vipers, the state-ranked Lady Highlanders had what it took to get the job done and advance to the next round.
The No. 2 Lady Highlanders rallied for a 23-25, 26-28, 25-14, 25-21, 15-13 win over Vandegrift at Bryan High School to advance to the regional semifinals for the eighth straight year.
The Woodlands (47-4) will await the winner of Tuesday’s match between Plano West and Rockwall. The regional semifinals will be played at Johnson Coliseum on the campus of Sam Houston State on Friday at 5 p.m. The regional championship will be the following day at 1 p.m.
The win was career No. 400 for Terri Wade, who became the Lady Highlanders coach in 2015. She previously coached at Montgomery High School for eight years.
The Lady Highlanders were lifted by strong offensive performances by senior Dylan Maberry and freshman Julieta Valdes. Maberry totaled 23 kills while Valdes factored in with 21. Maberry also had 20 digs for a double-double.
Senior Amanda Ifeanyi also reached double digits in kills with 10 while junior Natasha Zorbas had nine and a team-best five blocks.
The Lady Highlanders had 86 digs with senior Allie Griffith leading the way with 23. Junior Jackie Lee had 15 digs while fellow junior Claire Arend had 13.
Junior Clara Brower put up an astounding 60 assists and added seven digs.
Lee had nine of the team’s 13 aces on night.
