The John Cooper School track and field teams competed at the Southwest Preparatory Conference championships over the weekend at Episcopal High School, earning several medals against competition from around the state and region.
The girls team led the way with a fifth-place finish, scoring 67 points. The Dragons trailed Kinkaid (198), Greenhill (125.5), Episcopal (109.5) and St. John’s (75.5) in the standings.
Cooper was led individually by a pair of two-time SPC medalists. Uche Oguchi took second and third place, respectively, in the 400-meter run (58.30) and 800-meter run (2:17.37).
Madison Breaux also had two standout performances, taking the bronze in the 100-meter hurdles (15.56) and 300-meter hurdles (46.50).
Amara Oguchi was the other medalist for Cooper, taking silver in the shot put (38-10.00).
The Dragons also took bronze in the 4x800-meter relay as the team of Eva Minarovic, Bailey Leavitt, Katie Drake and Oguchi clocked in at 9 minutes, 47.97 seconds.
The Cooper boys finished seventh overall as a team with a score of 66 points. They were narrowly edged by Episcopal (68) and were within 12 points of Greenhill (69.5), St. Stephen’s (78) and Casady (78). St. John’s (139) won the meet, and St. Mark’s (127.5) was the runner-up.
The Dragons were led by the only SPC champion the school produced — Tega Ewherido, who won gold in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 41.01 seconds.
Gregory Groppell took silver in the discus (16-07.00), and teammate Jack O’Riordan captured silver in the high jump (6-00.00).
The Dragons also took bronze in the 4x400-meter relay as the team of Thomas Elhoury, Evan Burchfiel, Ewherido and Erik Burns crossed the finish line at 3 minutes, 28.93 seconds.
