Ashley Gonzales scored the eventual game-winning goal in the 61st minute as Caney Creek edged Lake Creek 4-3 in District 20-5A Saturday afternoon.
Caney Creek (9-6-3, 4-4, 12 points) now trails Lake Creek (6-7-2, 4-4-1, 13 points) by just a point for fourth place in the league standings.
Julie Mendoza scored on a penalty kick to open the game and then assisted on the next two Lady Panther goals. Elyn Zamudio scored a goal from Mendoza and then Ruby Castillo scored off a free kick from the foot of Mendoza before halftime.
Trailing by two goals, Lake Creek scored with 12 minutes to play but couldn’t get the equalizer before time expired. Alyn Zamudio, Montse Ramos and Brandy Amaya each were strong on defense for Caney Creek.
Alexi Landburg, Gracie Wiley and Morgan McGee each scored goals for Lake Creek.
The Lady Panthers travel to Cleveland Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. while Lake Creek hosts first-place Kingwood Park.
Montgomery wins third game this week
Montgomery ended the long week with nine points after a 9-0 win at Cleveland in District 20-5A Saturday morning.
The Lady Bears (8-5-2, 7-1, 21 points) outscored their three opponents 15-0 this week.
Against Cleveland, Ashlee Stoltje, Jenna Attebery and Kendall Zimny each scored two goals. Makenzie Griffith, Sarah Scheler and Randylynn Woods each had one goal.
Kayla Zimny earned the shutout in net.
Montgomery hits the road again Tuesday at Dayton.
Porter blanked by K-Park
Porter fell 3-0 to first-place Kingwood Park in District 20-5A play Saturday afternoon at Randall Reed Stadium.
Porter coach Luis Valle was pleased with the effort of his team despite missing its starting goalkeeper and top defender.
The Spartans (9-6-2, 5-2-2, 17 points), which is in third place in the league standings, hosts rival New Caney Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
Caney Creek earns big road win
Caney Creek took to the road Saturday and won 3-1 at Lake Creek in District 20-5A.
The Panthers (7-5-2, 5-2-1, 16 points) got a pair of goals from Mario Leon while Uvaldo Lozano provided the third goal.
Lake Creek (11-6-2, 4-4-1, 13 points) saw its two-game win streak come to an end. Justin Mayes scored the lone goal for the Lions.
Caney Creek hosts Cleveland Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. while the Lions welcome in Kingwood Park at 7 p.m.
New Caney tops Broncos
New Caney picked up a 3-2 win over Dayton Saturday afternoon in a District 20-5A home game.
The Eagles (7-6, 5-4, 15 points) received goals by Jose Gomez, Angel Hernandez and Jaime Sandoval. Alan Torres had an assist.
New Caney hosts Porter in a rivalry match at Randall Reed Stadium Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
Porter falls to K-Park
Porter lost a battle of District 20-5A’s top teams 7-1 at Kingwood Park on Saturday.
The Spartans (10-3, 7-1, 21 points) have a game in hand because of a postponement Friday, but now trail the Panthers (15-2-2, 8-0-1, 25 points) in the standings.
Porter takes on rival New Caney at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Randall Reed Stadium.
Splendora rolls to win
Splendora beat host Hamshire-Fannett 5-0 on Saturday in District 22-4A play.
The Wildcats (12-6-2, 4-1-1, 13 points) got a pair of goals from Baruc Delgado. Eduardo Avellaneda, Hector Villegas and Carlos Jimenez scored one goal each.
Splendora is at Anahuac at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
