Fishing on Lake Conroe is good once again. The water temperature at the dam early in the morning has been running 54.6 degrees. As the day wears on and the sun comes up, it has been warming up, especially in the shallows and back waters of the creeks. The water at this time is clear, the level is 201.09 feet, and no water is being released, according to the San Jacinto River Authority.

Black bass fishing is good. Fishing guide Butch Terpe said he has been catching them shallow in water from 2-6 feet deep on the nests and around submerged vegetation and lay down logs. He said he was out recently and caught keepers up to five pounds. He caught them on soft plastic worms, spinner baits, chatterbaits and Rat-L-Traps. Terpe said the water temperature in the shallows was 65-70 degrees.

Crappie fishing is good. Terpe had trips out Friday and Saturday, and they caught half a dozen in the shallows in the first hour or two after sunrise and then moved on. Some people have reported catching crappie in marina boat stalls 9-10 feet deep. Minnows and jig are both working well.

Catfish are good once again on baited holes. Terpe said the parties he has had out recently have had fast action of keeper catfish and limits of catfish are not unusual. Generally the sizes are running 1-2 pounds with an occasional three-pound catfish landed. They are on baited holes in 15-20 feet of water. Good bait for catfish right now is shrimp and punch baits. Chicken livers will also work well. Terpe said he personally likes a No. 8 sponge hook with punch bait.

Hybrid stripers and white bass have slowed down and probably remain so until April when Terpe says is the peak for the white bass spawn. Terpe said he has had reports of a few hybrids being caught on the baited holes when catfishing.

Bream are still deep with the cool water. A few are showing up when fishing 20 feet deep or so, but until the water warms up for a while, they will remain slow. Meal worms and night crawlers are good baits.

Terpe, who works out of Stow-A-Way Marina, has made the facts and information for this fishing report available. Terpe has been a full-time guide for over 30 years. He can be reached at 936-856-7080. For information about Stow-A-Way Marina, call 936-856-4531.
