Oak Ridge alumna Mersadez Nephew had to wait longer to begin her college basketball career than some.
But once she hit the floor at McLennan Community College in Waco, Nephew put together a productive freshman season.
Nephew was named to the North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference team earlier this month.
NJCAA basketball was delayed from its normal November start to the season and began in January due to COVID-19.
Nephew averaged 13.3 points per game for the Highlanders to go along with 4.9 rebounds, 0.5 assists and 1.1 steals.
Nephew made a splash in first college game on Jan. 20 against Texas Christian College as she dropped 25 points on 50 percent shooting (10 for 20). She scored 28 total points over her next five games before reeling off six straight games where 21.7 points per game.
Nephew scored a season-high 28 points on March 4 against Collin Community College.
The Highlanders went 10-12 on the year and were eliminated in the NTJCAC Region IV Conference Tournament - North Semifinal.
Nephew played a key role in Oak Ridge’s success over the years and that resulted in the Montgomery County Offensive MVP award her senior year for coach Deidre Vasquez.
A trio from Montgomery County have seen playing time this year for Stephen F. Austin. Junior Savanna Parker (Splendora) is batting .241 with an RBI in 18 games for the Lumberjacks. Freshman Alex Dubose (Magnolia) has a homer and seven RBIs while batting .263 in 24 games. Fellow freshman Madison Nguyen has two hits and an RBI in 18 at-bats.
Sophomore Skylar Stockton (The Woodlands) has appeared in 30 games with 20 starts for UNC-Willmington. Stockton has scored eight runs while driving in two. She has eight hits, including a double and a triple.
Casey Dixon (Willis) is 4-0 so far during her junior season in the circle for Louisiana-Lafayette. Dixon has a 2.47 ERA with an allowed batting average of .230. The former Ladykat standout has pitched 22 2/3 innings with 15 strikeouts and 11 walks.
Kaelin Morkisch (New Caney) is batting .297 for Colorado Christian University so far during her junior year. Morkisch had 11 RBIs and three extra base hits.
Tyler Davis (Oak Ridge) is 4-2 so far during his junior season at Sam Houston State. The righthander has a 4.12 ERA with 31 strikeouts to just six walks. Teammate Kyle Backhus (Willis) has made five starts for the Bearkats and has a 5.87 ERA with 14 strikeouts and 13 walks. Steven Beard (The Woodlands) has logged 11 1/3 innings with eight earned runs allowed and eight strikeouts.
Brandon Birdsell (Willis) is 4-1 for Texas Tech with seven starts under his belt. The junior has a 3.06 ERA, which is second beset on the Red Raiders. Birdsell has struck out 36 with just nine walks.
Josh Ekness (The Woodlands) is 1-2 for Lamar so far during his freshman season. The former Highlander has an ERA of 5.11 and 34 strikeouts in 24 2/3 innings. Teammate Dylan Johnson (Splendora) has pitched 25 2/3 innings with 27 strikeouts to 11 walks. His record is 1-1 with a 2.81 ERA.
Will Sammons (Oak Ridge) and the Mary Hardin-Baylor golf team won the American Southwest Conference Tournament on Tuesday. The freshman carded a 230 (79-81-70) with his best round of the tournament coming on the final day Sammons finished tied for 25th overall. It’s the eighth conference team title in program history for the Crusaders.
