Fishing on Lake Conroe for another week was good while anglers worked around the weather fronts. The rain and accompanying thunder and lightning during the week was scary but settled down for a productive weekend. The water temperature in the lake dropped just below 70 degrees at the dam in the morning but is warming up again. The level got up a touch over pool and water is being released. Pool is 201 feet above mean sea level.
Black bass fishing is showing good catches with plenty of five pound plus fish being recorded. They are biting early from the shallows around logs and vegetation and also on brush and other structure down to 20 feet deep. It was also reported that bass are being caught later I the day in the shade under docks. Soft plastic worms and lizards are being used to lure the bass into biting as are crankbaits to depths from the bank out to 20 feet. Early spinnerbaits are also working.
Catfish are good and can be found on baited holes along the humps and points in 18 to 25 feet of water. Punch bait on sponge hooks or shrimp are working well as are chicken liver. Drifting shad or cut bait across the flats can provide some fun and good catches of blue catfish.
Crappie are on the brush, bridge pylons and other structure at a depth of 12 to 20 feet. Some large crappie are being caught and the best bait seems to be minnows nonetheless jigs are working well for anglers who can use them.
Hybrids and white bass are suspended over humps and points. Trolling #13 Pet Spoons behind deep divers like Hellbender Downriggers are working well as are live shad and jigging slab spoons once you find the fish.
Bream are down with the crappie on brush and along any rocks or riprap and large bream are being caught. Night crawler or meal worms are the best baits however some large bream are being caught on minnows. You can have fun with light pan fish jigs when the wind lies down or if you find some shelter.
