Legendary golfer Annika Sörenstam made history at the Insperity Invitational last spring, becoming the first woman to ever compete in the 3M Greats of Golf event during the annual PGA TOUR Champions stop.
The 10-time LPGA major champion is returning to the annual competition at The Woodlands Country Club Tournament Course this year with three other women who have shaped the history of the game with their prolific careers. Juli Inkster, Nancy Lopez and Pat Bradley will tee off alongside some of the other greats of the sport, including Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player and Lee Trevino.
“It was a dream come true for me last year to be able to play with Jack and Gary,” Sörenstam said in a press release. “I was very, very honored and thrilled at the same time, so I’m excited to be able to come back. The Insperity Invitational has done such a great job recognizing the careers of many of the greatest to play the game, which has rekindled memories for the spectators and all of us as well. I’m so happy to be able to help celebrate the women’s game by having Nancy, Juli and Pat, who I looked up to throughout my career, with us this year.”
Sörenstam will team up with Nicklaus, Player and Trevino for an 18-hole scramble against three others teams following the final tee time of the second round of the Insperity. The players will hit the course around 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 4. Bradley will compete alongside Tom Weiskopf, David Graham and Tony Jacklin; Lopez will join forces with Dave Stockton, Larry Nelson and Hale Irwin; and Inkster will team up with Fuzzy Zoeller, Ben Crenshaw and Bill Rogers.
“Not only is this a group of great golfers, they are incredible people and special role models for all of us,” Insperity executive director Brian Naugle said in a press release. “Reuniting these extraordinary ambassadors of our game has become a staple of tournament week for us. They provide hours of entertainment and a lifetime of memories for our fans each year. I think it is a highlight of the year, not only for all of us, but also for these great players who get to have a fun competition with their friends.”
All four of the women competing in the event are members of the World Golf Hall of Fame.
Sörenstam ranks third all-time with 72 victories on the LPGA TOUR and is fourth in major championships with 10. She was named Player of the Year eight times before retiring in 2008 and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2003.
Lopez racked up 48 victories during her illustrious career on the LPGA TOUR. She won three major titles and was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1987.
Inkster won 31 tournaments on the LPGA TOUR and captured seven major victories. She is the only player in tour history to win two majors for three consecutive decades. She joined the Hall of Fame in 2000.
Bradley was a two-time Player of the Year and captured six major titles and 35 wins. She was named to the Hall of Fame in 1991.
“I think it is wonderful we have added four women professional players this year,” Player said in a press release. “I have watched a lot of women’s golf over the last five years, and I have been so impressed. When you play with them, it is quite a shock. I was unaware of how well they play. They all play such beautiful golf. I think this is a tremendous treat for the spectators, and especially the young girls who will be inspired by watching them play.”
