The John Cooper School’s Chris McDonald claimed the boys Southwest Preparatory Conference championship Tuesday at Woodforest Golf Club in Montgomery.

McDonald followed up a first-round 78 with a 72 in his second and final round. His total score of 150 edged a pair of 151s from Chris Berzina of Trinity Valley and Brooks Morrell of St. John’s.

The John Cooper boys team finished third behind champion Kinkaid, which shot a team score of 625, and Trinity Valley, which shot a 644. Led by McDonald, the Dragons shot a 661.

Cooper’s Grant Carter finished seventh individually and earned All-SPC honors with a total score of 158, achieved with a pair of 79s.

Sean Kelly (84-79-163) missed the All-SPC cut-off by one stroke. David Noyes (93-99-192) and Michael McGurk (96-97-193) rounded out Cooper’s team card.


Cooper’s Tillie Claggett placed third individually at the girls SPC championship Tuesday with a two-round score of 147.

Claggett followed up a round of 75 with a 72 to close out play Tuesday.

As a team, Cooper placed sixth with a team score of 850. St. John’s won with its 591. Christine Wang (70-68-138) and Ashley Yen (72-72-144) led the SPC champs.

Claire Gymph (115-116-231), Tori Osmond (117-119-236) and Vanessa Vaz (116-120-236) rounded out Cooper’s team card.
