Running back Mitch Hall totaled 314 yards on the ground and four touchdowns as the Magnolia Bulldogs opened up the Craig Martin era with a 35-10 win over Barbers Hill at Bulldog Stadium.
The Bulldogs (1-0) led 21-7 at halftime as Hall had touchdown runs of 20, 18 and 14 yards respectively. He added a 40-yard run in the fourth quarter.
Quarterback Travis Moore was 7 of 19 for 101 yards and two interceptions. Ben Renfro had two receptions for 41 yards while Heston Kelly had one catch for 36 yards.
Rylan Ritch had the other Magnolia touchdown as he intercepted a pass in the fourth quarter and returned it 30 yards.
The win was Martin’s first as a head varsity coach. He took over for Sterling Doty in February after previously working as an assistant coach for Temple High School.
Magnolia travels to Shadow Creek to play the Class 5A (Div. I) state finalist Sharks at 7 p.m. Friday.
NEW CANEY TOPS CROSBY
New Caney opened its season with a 28-8 win over Crosby at Cougar Stadium on Friday.
The Eagles (1-0) scored a pair of touchdowns before the midway point of the opening quarter and never trailed.
Zion Childress opened the scoring with a 36-yard touchdown pass to CJ Sanders, then ran in a 9-yard score to make it 14-0 with 7:41 to go in the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Childress ran in a 17-yard score. Sanders capped the scoring with a 58-yard run in the fourth quarter.
Childress rushed for 192 yards on 23 carries, while Sanders had 149 yards on 19 carries.
The Eagles host Houston Heights on Friday in Week 2.
MAG WEST ROLLS PAST BRENHAM
Magnolia West began the Blake Joseph era with a 38-10 home victory over Brenham on Friday, outscoring the Cubs 28-6 over the final two quarters.
The Mustangs (1-0) were powered by their running game, which produced 397 yards while averaging more than eight yards per carry. Nick Joseph led the way with 169 yards and three touchdowns on 14 carries. Hunter Bilbo added 146 yards on 18 carries, and quarterback Tristan Brady ran for 61 yards and a score on eight carries. Ben Murray also had a rushing touchdown.
Brady completed 17 of 29 passes for 170 yards. Brock Daulton was the leading receiver, hauling in four passes for 46 yards.
Blake Joseph took over the Magnolia West program during this past offseason when former coach J.D. Berna was promoted to Magnolia ISD athletic director.
The Mustangs return to action at 7:30 p.m. Friday at home against C.E. King.
WILLIS DROPS GAME AT HUNTSVILLE
Johnny McHenry totaled two rushing touchdowns but Willis fell 55-22 at Huntsville Friday night in a non-district game.
McHenry totaled 66 yards on the ground and 20 receiving. One of his touchdowns came on the opening drive as Willis took the lead. McHenry also converted a two-point attempt.
Wide receiver Ja’Kobe McCoy made six receptions for 126 yards and a touchdown.
Junior quarterback Steele Bardwell was 16-for-28 for 188 yards, a touchdown and two picks.
Willis (0-1) scored all of its points in the first half and totaled 29 penalties on the game.
The Wildkats have their home opener this Friday against Lake Creek at Berton A. Yates Stadium.
COOPER SHUTS OUT FRASSATI
The John Cooper School won its first game under new head coach Erik DeHaven, shutting out Frassati Catholic 43-0 on Friday night at Pugh Field.
The Dragons (1-0) scored with a sense of urgency all night -- their longest scoring drive lasted just four plays.
On the ground, Ben DeLoit and Owen Baadsgaard combined for 190 of Cooper’s 212 yards. DeLoit had 98 yards on 10 carries, while Baadsgaard had 92 yards on six carries.
In the air, Kaedyn Sullivan was 12-for-16 for 150 yards, four touchdowns and an interception. Thomas Elkhoury, Kielar Sullivan, DeLoit and Jaxson Pierce all caught a touchdown.
The Cooper defense held Frassati to just 27 total yards and minus-7 rushing yards.
The Dragons host Legacy Prep in Week 2 on Friday.
COVENANT WINS BIG
Covenant Christian kicked off its 2019 season with a 54-14 road win over Apple Springs.
The Cougars (1-0) were led by Wade Harper, who rushed for 272 yards and four touchdowns on 31 carries. All of Harper’s touchdowns were scored in the first half and two were runs of 19 or more yards.
Covenant only threw the ball 10 times in the win. Reighn Carter was 3-for-8 for 47 yards, a touchdown and an interception. Freshman Kade Houston was 2-for-2 for 29 yards and a touchdown.
Carter led the way defensively with eight-and-a-half tackles and three for loss. Ryan Burkhalter had seven tackles, three for loss and a sack.
The Cougars led 36-14 at halftime and held Apple Springs scoreless in the second half.
Covenant hosts Faith Academy on Friday in Week 2.
LEGACY PREP FALLS
Legacy Prep suffered a 40-21 home loss against Sacred Heart to begin the season on Friday.
Sam Bargainer led the way offensively for the Lions (0-1), rushing for 99 yards and a touchdown on eight carries. He also had five catches for 91 yards and another score, giving him 190 total yards.
Carson McDonald led the defensive efforts with 13 tackles. Harrison Shook had eight tackles, and Chapman Wendell finished with four tackles and a forced fumble. Jeremy Brown had a fumble recovery.
Legacy Prep returns to action at 7 p.m. Friday at John Cooper.
