Montgomery went 2-1 in pool play on the first day of competition at the 7-on-7 state tournament Friday at Veterans Park and Athletic Complex in College Station.
The Bears started the afternoon by pulling out a 42-39 victory over San Antonio O’Connor. They followed that up with a 47-14 loss against Frisco Lone Star before beating Waco Midway 47-34 in the final matchup of the day.
O’Connor and Lone Star also finished 2-1 and will play in the Division I championship bracket on Saturday. Montgomery came up short on tiebreakers and will be competing in the consolation bracket.
The Bears will play Mesquite Horn at 8 a.m. today on Field 4B. The winner of that matchup will face either Klein Oak or Port Neches-Grove in the second round at 10:15 a.m.
The last time Montgomery played in the state tournament two summers ago, the team went 1-1 in the championship bracket.
