Several local football players were recognized for their performances on the field this past season when the Texas Sports Writers Association Class 5A All-State Team was released on Friday.
Magnolia led all Montgomery County programs with five selections. Senior offensive linemen Kade Bond and Derek Bowman, who signed with North Texas and Houston, respectively, were second-team selections. Running back Mitch Hall, who had more than 2,000 yards as a junior, was a third-team pick. Senior wide receiver and Utah signee Ben Renfro and senior defensive back Jarrett Pleasant, the District 8-5A Defensive Player of the Year earned honorable mention.
New Caney had two selections. Junior linebacker and Texas commit Derrick Harris Jr. was named to the second team. Senior quarterback and Texas State signee Zion Childress, named The Courier’s Player of the Year, earned honorable mention.
Porter had one selection as senior linebacker Zhyon Bell was given honorable mention.
Frisco Lone Star senior wide receiver and Oklahoma signee Marvin Mims was selected as the Class 5A Offensive Player of the Year, and Denton Ryan junior lineman Ja’Tavion Sanders and Abilene Cooper back Dylon Davis shared the Defensive Player of the Year honor.
