Conroe Yacht Club

In 1974, a time when there where only a few sailors on the lake, a meeting was held to form Lake Conroe Racing and Cruising Association (LCRCA). These sailors met every chance they could, cruising and learning to race with the ultimate goal being to one day have their own facility. The day came in 1980, when some afordable property was offered for sale on the lake. But to everyone’s dismay, all were not ready to put their money on the table and the deal slipped away. The following year the present property became available, and through the efforts of a few sailors a partnership was formed to develop River Road Yacht Club, (whose name was later changed to Conroe Yacht Club). Eventually all former LCRCA members joined, and we continue today with our original racing and cruising.

Huricane Alicia destroyed the marina in 1983. The marina was re-build and a breakwater was installed in 1984. During an expansion program in 1988, the marina was expanded to its current layout and the dry storage area was developed.

Conroe Yacht Club is more than a facility, we are a family. Our members run the club, and decide who, what, where, when, and how. The main attraction for the average boat owner is a place to work on their boat. A place to store more than one boat ( the second at a reduced rate). A place to sit amongst the trees on a hot day. A place to bring your family and friends. A place to relax and get away from it all.

The Conroe Yacht Club facilities are on six wooded acres on the West Shore of Lake Conroe. It contains a large grass apron for sail folding

The facilities include:

Club House
Large Parking Area
60 wet Boat Slips
Large Dry Storage Area
Two Launching Ramps
Mast Stepper
Boat Work Area with Hoist
Large Deck Overlooking the Lake
Playground Equipment
Beach Area
Picnic Tables
Barbecue Pits
Board Boat Rack

I am a sailor of center board monohull and catamaran sailboats with about 45 years experience. I presently just picked up a classic Chrysler Man O War. I am interested in possibly joining your club. Would like to know what are the dues. I am a disabled veteran but still able to sail. I am also on a somewhat fixed income as I am also retired. Still in the process of getting this boat ready for the water which should be very soon. I am also interested in volunteering for the race committee if needed.

I’d like information on joining. My name is Ron Gilstrap. I came to Lake Conroe in 76 as an exhibition barefoot skier. I lost my right leg in 72. At 70 yrs old now, I still barefoot. Had a ski shop on 105 at the bridge in the late 70’s. Still teach a little. Opening a new business on 1097. Customs and Classics. Sell classic wood boats and do wood and fiberglass work. I’ve seen the lake grow over the years. Some good and some bad. Still stay active in how to make Lake Conroe a great recreational lake.
