When the Montgomery Bears are playing later that night, Don Johnson wakes up in the morning with the same energy and enthusiasm that matches when he played the game.
“Sometimes I see the light at the end of the tunnel,” Johnson told the audience. “But I still wake up the day of the game like I’m going to play. I still love it and it still gets me.”
At the 44th Annual Conroe Noon Lions Club Roundball Roundup on Wednesday, Johnson proudly talked about his 25th season with the Bears and his 35th season overall as a coach and educator.
Montgomery is looking to make the playoffs consecutively for the first time since 2012-14 when the Bears made the playoffs all three of those seasons. The Bears were fourth place last year in District 20-5A.
“The season is not a destination, it’s a journey,” Johnson said. “And on that journey, you can run into a lot of things.”
Johnson is excited about the group that features six seniors and four juniors.
“This year’s team at this point in the season is 2-1,” Johnson said. “We are blessed with a group of kids that love to play together and play hard.”
Johnson entertained the crowd — as he usually does — at the Lone Star Convention Center. The veteran coach did his best Jim Mora ‘Playoffs?!” impersonation as well as a Dennis Green “They are who we thought they were” routine as the spectators laughed.
