Grand Oaks boys basketball coach Mike Day got to speak for the first time at the 44th Annual Conroe Noon Lions Club Roundball Roundup on Wednesday afternoon at the Lone Start Convention Center.
The Grizzlies have recently started their first varsity season with just freshmen, sophomores and juniors in the building.
“There’s no question that we are young,” Day told the audience. “But the biggest gift we have every day is how many new kids are moving into this new community that we are in.”
Grand Oaks, the newest high school in Conroe ISD, played a junior varsity schedule last year after putting their roster together from scratch.
When this school year began, Day and his staff were surprised to see kids interested in playing that they didn’t even know about.
“At the start of the school year, we literally had 10 new kids walk in the door that we didn’t even know were coming,” Day said. “We have a very blessed situation at Grand Oaks.”
Grand Oaks is 3-0 to start the year and looking forward to the challenges of District 20-5A on the horizon.
“We’re going to figure out how varsity is going to go very, very quickly,” Day said. “Our kids are working hard and I love them. We have a lot of them and we’re trying to play a different style and uptempo and are able to use our depth a little more.”
