As Clifton McNeely stood at the podium to speak about his team at the 44th annual Conroe Noon Lions Club Roundball Roundup on Wednesday, he began with a message for the community.

“I think we have to get back to the point where we, as a community — even if you don’t have kids in our programs — is that we go back and support these young people,” McNeely said. “ … Our kids need that, I think we have an opportunity to challenge our businesses and our friends and our neighbors — let’s go watch a high school basketball game; let’s go watch a high school baseball game; let’s go to the football game.”

McNeely spent nearly four minutes speaking on the subject of community support and, at the end, challenged those in attendance to commit to attending one sporting event over the course of the remaining school year.

“I hope maybe that resonates with some of you,” McNeely said to applause from the crowd.

Moving forward to the subject of his team in particular, the veteran coach explained that his group is young, but talented. College Park is 6-1 and headed to a challenging tournament this weekend in Dallas.

“We’ll see if we can play with the big boys,” McNeely said.

As is the case with other teams in District 15-6A, the Cavaliers are preparing for a gauntlet.

“When you look at our district and the great coaches over here, each and every night, it’s an exciting event,” McNeely said. “Kids are prepared to play; coaches are prepared to coach. … I’ve got a great group of young men. They take care of business in the classroom. I can take them anywhere, and they’re great members of this community.”
