Adam Kloffenstein, a hard-throwing prospect in the Toronto Blue Jays minor league system, is having a great summer so far.
The 2018 graduate of Magnolia High School was recently honored by the Northwest League as Pitcher of the Week. The 6-foot-5, 243-pound right-hander is currently playing for the Vancouver Canadians, a Single-A Short Season team of Toronto.
A third-round pick a year ago in the MLB Draft, Kloffenstein is 3-2 in 2019 with a 2.27 ERA. This past Sunday, Kloffenstein had a season-best seven strikeouts in a 6-0 win over the Spokane Indians. He went five innings with just two hits allowed and five walks.
On the year in eight starts, Kloffenstein has struck out 33 while walking 15. Opponents are batting .195 and his WHIP is an impressive 1.12. Kloffenstein has only allowed one earned run in his previous four starts for the Canadians.
For his Pitcher of the Week award which stemmed from two starts (July 15 and 21), Kloffenstein went 11 innings with an 0.81 ERA. He struck out nine.
Kloffenstein, who is currently 18 years old, was limited to two starts a year ago.
Paul Goldschmidt (The Woodlands) continued his hot streak at the plate as he has hit home runs in seven of his last eight games entering Wednesday night for the St. Louis Cardinals. The former Highlander and Texas State player hit a pair of home runs during a three-game series at Busch Stadium against the Houston Astros last weekend. He has 11 homers for the month of July and 25 on the year. For the season (entering Wednesday), Goldschmidt is batting .258 with 58 RBIs.
Pitcher Austin Pruitt (College Park) is back down in Triple-A, playing for the Tampa Bay Rays’ International League team, the Durham Bulls. Pruitt, a 29-year old right-handed pitcher, hasn’t allowed an earned run in his last two appearances. For the year in Triple-A, Pruitt is 3-3 with a 5.40 ERA, 48 strikeouts and just 11 walks in 43 1/3 innings.
Luken Baker (Oak Ridge), a second-round compensatory pick of the St. Louis Cardinals last year, is batting .220 for the Single-A Advanced Palm Beach Cardinals. Baker went 3-for-4 with a homer in a game on Sunday against the Dunedin Blue Jays. For the year, Baker has six homers and 39 RBIs.
