Five-year-old Chandler Newport of Conroe has been obsessed with basketball since before he could even walk, according to his mother Tammy. On the morning of Aug. 30, the tiny but mighty student finally got to show off his skills in front of hundreds of his peers.
Chandler returned to Covenant Christian School in Conroe for his first year of pre-K last month. Like many younger students, Newport said Chandler was struggling with getting into the back-to-school grind. In an effort to try and make Chandler motivated to get to school on time, Newport promised her son he could play basketball in the gym before class, as long as they got to school early.
Her plan worked and on Aug. 30, Chandler couldn't wait to get to school and start playing. The entire gym was filled with students waiting to go to their first class, but that didn't deter Chandler.
After a few attempts, Chandler made a basket and the crowd of students erupted in cheers, catching Newport off guard, she said. To her surprise, students starting chanting her son's name, calling him "MVP" and cheering him on as he kept shooting the ball.
"Then all of a sudden he made three [shots] in a row and they were just jumping out of the stands... I was just amazed," Newport said. "It was like it was a movie. Everyone knew his name by the end of the day."
Newport said Chandler was "pumped" from the experience and is always eager to get to school early now to try and re-live his basketball fame in a new game on the school gym's court.
"He is just full of life and excitement and he has no fear," Newport said. "Both of us [Newport and her husband] play golf and my parents do too, so we were hoping he'd play golf. But it looks like he is going to be a basketball player now...maybe he will be a star one day, you know?"
