As Election Day approaches, April Sound residents have many choices to make. Not only do we have the city of Conroe election in which we can vote for the first time due to the annexation of our community, but there is also the MUD Board election on May 7. Early voting for the city of Conroe starts Monday. Our closest location for early voting is the Living Branch Church at 13229 Texas 105 West just up the road on the right hand side. If you choose to wait until May 7, you will have to journey to downtown Conroe to the City Hall Tower and find parking. The MUD Board voting is at The April Sound Church only on May 7, so be sure to mark that on your calendar even if you early vote in the city election. In addition to all that, the ballots will be arriving soon for all April Sound property owners to select two persons to become members of the Board of Trustees of the April Sound Property Owners’ Association.

Sunday, May 15, just possibly could bring the most fun you could ever have playing the game of golf. It is the day set for the April Sound Civic Association’s Third Annual Golf Party! The Civic Association had been hosting a fundraising golf tournament for many years, but three years ago ASCA Board member Richard Tibbetts wanted to change it up and make the day into a big party for all who participated. This year will bring added surprises because May 15 is the last day that the White nine will be open before it closes for renovation. Golfers will be able to take home some souvenirs from that. What, you may be asking, will make this Golf Party different from other tournaments? Let me tell you . . .

As plans are being made for Easter Sunday, the families of April Sound have many choices of activities. Hopefully, the rain will have passed and the day will dawn sunny and bright for all the Easter festivities planned for residents of April Sound today. First in the day for early risers will be the April Sound Church’s Resurrection Sunday Service at the lake behind the Country Club starting at 7:00 a.m. An Easter Breakfast Buffet will be served from 7:30 – 9:30 a.m. in the Phoenix Grille featuring waffle bar, scrambled eggs, breakfast potatoes, fresh fruit, sausage and bacon and biscuits and gravy. At 10:00 a.m. at the April Sound Church there will be a special service for kids followed by an Easter Egg Hunt. On the April Sound Church’s website, two bunnies are talking outside the Church. One bunny says to the other, “Here at the Church I only use Resurrection Eggs!”

I was honored to preside over the April Sound Civic Association’s Annual General Meeting on March 4 in the Lakeside Room of the Country Club. In addition to presentation of minutes from last year’s meeting from Secretary Allyson Allen, reading and explanations of the treasury report by new treasurer Beckey Boone, and introduction of Board Members, several Board members reported on the various committees within ASCA. Events Chairperson Jen Wahlstrom spoke on all the Special Events that Civic Association sponsors, especially including details about the “Easter Eggstravaganza” coming soon for Easter Sunday. Ed Kelly, who serves as our liaison with the POA Parks Committee, gave a complete update of 2015 park improvements and an overview of plans for future park projects, some of which have bids in the works and will be starting soon. Beckey Boone, Chair of our Beautification Committee, spoke about the joint project we are undertaking with the POA Beautification Committee for the renovation of the flag pole bed at the end of the Boulevard. Together with Kay Mathis of Garden World, members of both committees have developed a beautiful and exciting plan for this much-needed landscaping improvement of our Boulevard, and ASCA and POA are splitting the cost. Beckey also explained about the ASCA plan to replace the resin statues along the Boulevard with Bronze figures. Selection has been made for statues representing all the aspects of life in April Sound. The statues will be set in concrete and will last for a long, long time. We are currently working on ideas to fund this huge project all suggestions are welcome.

Awhile back I was with my friend Pam Melms and she told me a great story. I liked it so much I asked her to work with me to write it up so we could put it in the POA Newsletter. There was not enough room for the article to be included in the March issue, so I thought I’d share it with you in this column. We dubbed it “The Dear Deer Rescue.”

Bentwater

Array ( [post_title] => Bentwater [post_content] =>

There’s no doubt that we’re smack dab in the middle of mudbug season because local restaurants are serving up giant platters of the little red critters for only a few bucks. So, it’s completely understandable that, when your mailbox recently produced a MUD election announcement, you were confused. After all, with all the mudbug mania going on, it could very well have been a solicitation promoting a crawfish menu of some sort. And, technically, it is like a menu. Select any two items from options A, B or C. Admit it. Some aren’t completely certain what MUD stands for and most don’t care as long as our water flows, our toilets flush and our storm drains actually drain. And, since they do, this election could be determined by a few dozen votes and a whole bunch of apathy. But the MUD board, your MUD board, has been authorized to spend up to 60 million of your dollars to build and maintain the infrastructure of Municipal Utility District #18 and, to date, they’ve actually issued bonds and invested right around $37 million toward that effort. Got your attention yet? Thought so. So, even though I’m sure you were intending to read the election information later, let’s talk about it now. Lou Tichacek and Gary Montgomery are both incumbents and Blair Smith is also throwing his hat into the ring. For each meeting, this high paying position provides a stipend sufficient to buy a nice dinner, so these gentlemen certainly aren’t in it for the money. They’re willing to give of their time and energy and intellect to help assure that you (which includes them) are well represented in the way funds are invested. Did I mention that the MUD board serves the exact same constituency as the POA? That’s us. So, get to know your candidates and make the effort to go vote. If you don’t know where to vote, just read your mail or pay attention and we’ll post it on Nextdoor Bentwater. It matters.

It matters.

Like many of you, I come from a time and place where decorum was a good thing. Where manners mattered. Where tradition was a very meaningful part of life. Attitudes were never uppity, but always thoughtful. Being the best we could be was a conscious intent long before it became a slogan for the Army. So, for me, the notion of belonging to a private country club was always aspirational. And wearing appropriate attire was never a topic for debate. We simply had a different definition of “cool.” The people I respected would never wear their shirttails out not nor their hat on backwards while on the golf course. And, they’d certainly never even entertain the thought of wearing jeans on the links. It’s not just that rules are rules. It’s about preserving the dignity of the venue we’d worked so hard to attain. Yet, there are exceptions to pretty much every rule and, sometimes, those exceptions aren’t merely acceptable, they’re applauded. Such was the case then the Bentwater LGA hosted their recent spring fling which I’m told was called “2016 LGA Saddle Up Ladies.” There were a total of 88 ladies, including members and guests, dressed in denim (yep, jeans), boots and hats. And it actually was “cool.” The fact that the world’s greatest rodeo show was going on an hour south of Bentwater may have something to do with the theme, but that’s just a theory. The fact is, the ladies looked way good! Awards were even given for “best boots,” which Mary Botkin (member) and June Hamilton (guest) won. Oh yeah, there were also awards given for golf, for gross and net in each of three flights, but my informant tells me I’ll run out of space to name them all. However, I will invest a few key strokes to call out the closest to the pin winners. Playing on the Wieskopf course, they were Debby Glass on #8, Marion Nojek on #14 and Bobbie Proctor on #17. Since there was no report to the contrary, I’m going to start a rumor that no one hit the green on #3. Must’ve been the tight jeans. Regardless, it was a great event enjoyed by all who participated. Special kudos to the co-chair ladies, Katy Tucker and Judy Weiss. Cowgirl up!

I often write about the fact that Bentwater residents are accomplished business executives, military leaders, teachers, writers, philanthropists and just plain good folks. Well, it seems we have some frustrated comedians (and bird watchers) in our midst, too. If you’re skeptical, just spend a few minutes on Nextdoor Bentwater and follow the thread started by Barbie Thomasson when she announced her supporting role in the Hitchcock movie, “The Birds.” Seems she’s not alone. Apparently our feathered friends have launched an all out assault throughout Bentwater and are attempting to smash our windows. And the suggested preventative measures range from pellet guns to CDs hanging by fishing line to posting photos of some of our political wannabes on your windows to rubber snakes. Of course, you could also follow Alexandra Hicks’ model. Just install a bird feeder and enjoy watching the show. But you aren’t likely to change the behavior because Mother Nature is simply smarter than you. And, in the for what it’s worth department, if you decide to challenge that thought, just keep in mind that that pellet guns break a lot more windows than birds.

Bentwater, have you heard? It’s political season and, my, how times have changed. I can recall back in Grandma’s day overhearing her refer to one particular politician as being a snake in the grass. If Grandma was still around, I doubt she’d be so polite. Though she was the most genteel soul ever, her tendency was to call a spade a spade (and go look that expression up before you accuse me of something untoward). And, compared to some of the superlatives we hear in our political discourse today, pointing fingers and calling out a snake in the grass actually sounds pretty tame. Almost cute. That is, of course, unless there really is a snake in your grass. Literally. And chances are pretty good there is. Right now. The alerts are out that the warm winter and very ample rain have combined to cause our friends without shoulders to procreate with gusto and be roaming a bit earlier than usual this spring. That means you’re likely to cross paths with one (or several) sometime soon. A quick Internet search reveals that, though there are over a hundred species of snakes in these United States, only nineteen are deemed to be a threat to humans and even a smaller number are actually dangerous enough to possibly be fatal. Problem is, of all those species that can make life uncomfortable for you (or your pets), pretty much all of them are right here in Texas. In Montgomery County. In Bentwater. Maybe in your backyard. Grandma sure was wise. She taught me that if I didn’t want to itch from mosquito bites, all I had to do was smack them after they lit on me but before they bit me. And, sure enough, Grandma’s wisdom worked every time. And your best defense against snakes is simply to see them first. More of Grandma’s wisdom. You’re welcome. So, before you start wading through the brush in search of that slightly errant drive, you need to ask yourself exactly what price you’re willing to pay for that $4 golf ball, because you’re sharing the same space with certain critters that might not share too willingly. My advice is to just keep it in the fairway and you’ll reduce your encounter rate significantly. Feel free to use my name when sharing that bit of wisdom to your grandkids.

As is our custom, my bride and I joined about 20 neighbors recently for our monthly neighborhood “pasta night at the club” gathering. Normally the dinner conversations revolve around sports or politics or weather or debating who had the most pathetic golf game yesterday. This particular week, two of our table mates were Jim and Carla Muldrow who, in addition to being good friends, are master gardeners. Translation. They know a lot of stuff about pretty much every plant there is. So, when the conversation shifted to how happy everyone was that the storm outside was knocking down that yucky yellow powder we all love to hate, the talk turned to pollen. Thought I’d share. I’ll keep this family-friendly and save the part about how the male pollen gets carried by the wind where it comes to rest on a female strobilus of other pine trees where it germinates. Instead, I’ll focus on the yellow blanket that covers everything we own for a few weeks each year. Seems it’s a common misconception that the pine pollen is a major contributor to your seasonal allergies. While pines do produce a copious volume of pollen, the fact is that it’s so heavy that it tends to fall to the ground rather than staying in the air. So, it’s not nearly as allergenic as lighter pollens that stay airborne longer. That means if you’re suffering from the sniffles, you’ll more likely being victimized by all the oaks that are suddenly bursting forth. The moral to the story is this. If you’d go to pasta night more often, you’d become a smarter person and learn lots of things you didn’t even know you needed to know. Hope to see you there.

The eclectic passions of the Bentwater citizenry are endless and the generosity that underwrites them is amazing. Most philanthropies you know. The American Cancer Society and the United Way for example. But here’s a new one for you. Shoes. Yep, you read that right. Shoes. I first learned about it when I found a bag of them sitting outside my front door. “What’s this?” I asked my bride. “Oh, those are for my fundraiser,” she replies. Seriously? Shoes? Fundrasier? Hmmm. And, here’s the larger story. If you ever visit Nextdoor Bentwater, you know that we actively support animal welfare issues. If you’re not into animals, stay with me because this is a much broader philanthropic opportunity. In preparation for an upcoming (April 30) fundraiser, Ales For Tails, to be held at Ransom’s Steakhouse for the Animal Shelter Volunteers of Texas, there are dozens of projects going on at Casa de Sellers and one of those involves shoes. Seems there’s an organization who “donates” per pound for wearable shoes. We collect them, they “donate”, they then distribute (or sell) them to those in need in third-world countries, and the ASVT benefits from their donation. Since everyone has perfectly good shoes in the back of their closet that they haven’t worn in years, it’s a win, win, win. So, from now until May 16th we’re filling a sizeable storage locker with collected shoes. From you. Bring ‘em.
